Forests are essential factors for water management, maintaining the health of ecosystems, performing the functions of natural buffers, raising water retention, improving soil structure, and hence, coping with climate change, reducing disasters and conserving biodiversity. Afforestation helps stabilize soils and prevents landslides, floods, and soil erosion. Sustainable forest management is essential for maintaining the ecological integrity of forests and enhancing the resilience of forest-dependent communities of CFUGs which can reduce the impacts of climate change and disasters by ensuring social and economic benefits. Livelihood activities such as agroforestry, ecotourism and non-timber forest products can improve market access to build enterprises and ultimately develop entrepreneurship that enhance sustainable livelihoods.
Research in the fields of climate change and DRR may be the mitigation measures for forest fires, a major field of interest in the context of Nepal. Facilitating knowledge sharing through different networks, conferences and publications helps to build up best practices and innovations related to sustainable forest management. Implementing adaptive management practices helps for promoting sustainable livelihoods which can ensures and provide critical ecosystem services that reduce vulnerabilities to climate impacts and disasters. Local communities involving community forest user groups (CFUGs) should be necessary to involve in operational plans, management plans and decision-making processes. By empowering CFUGs, recognizing their rights and building their capacity, we can enhance both environmental sustainability and community resilience to climate impacts and natural disasters.
